apples and oranges. i personally prefer LotR
Yeah, they're like comparing Star trek to Star wars. Space fantasy to Space fiction.
ASOIAF has more detailed characterization though obviously, which makes it superior in that regard, but Lotr has a better fitting theme and is much more realized in terms of lore tbh.

I mean one has finished and the other still hasn't, and probably never will. I don't think this is much of a contest. ASOIAF wishes it could be LOTR. And I say this as someone who actually prefers the former over the latter (in terms of personal enjoyment).
The one I didn't have to pay and spend 1/3 of my life in the theater for.

Of course Tolkien beats out Martin in lore though, then there's also the fact that he laid the foundations Martin tries so desperately to escape

The Silmarillion has just about everything ASoIAF has, murder, politics, betrayal, incest and Tolkien writes it betterThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

dude is in his 70's, pretty badly obese, it's been seven years since a A Dance with Dragons, 13 years since A Feast For Crows and 18 since he's put out a book that wasn't mostly filler
shame too, lots of stuff that are unresolved

I enjoyed A Song of Ice and Fire saga a lot more than reading the Lord of Ring books.
Never touched the Silmarillion so I can't say anything about that.
The hobbit book was garbage. It is a children book made before World War 2.
The Wheel of Times series is better than both.

LoTR definitely. Personally enjoy the lore, world, themes etc of it all way more. It's a classic for a reason.
GRRM isn't even on Tolkien's level as far as I'm concerned. Not a fan of ASOIAF
Tolkien
