Let's say Shima's fame saved him like the Kenshin author's did... Would it have been more popular had it been serialized before he got arrested?

Toriko's popularity didn't have anything to do with the arrest I think. It's more like people thought; overly buff guy that looks like goku that goes hunting for food in a world without girls. The anime quality didn't really help either.
The series failed to gain any steam despite Jump backing it for a decent period of time. It was only ever popular with a small segment of manga fans.
It's DBZ with worse characterization but better world building. It might have been popular 30 years ago but there isn't a serious market for that type of story any more.
I've met a lot of people who won't try Toriko because their aren't much for cute waifu material, which I think is stupid.
Especially when it has a girl as cute as Heracles![]()

it was never popular in Japan to begin with as well.
It didn't seem like my thing either until I saw the crossover OVA I thinkThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote![]()
Toriko > DB in terms of characters too.
There isn't a single DB character that can top Ichiryuu.

To be honest I never tried Toriko before, until I saw it was recommended highly around here. Always thought that it wasnt my kind of manga. Finished it within 4 days I think? Probably 3. Its too good imo
yeah, they prefer to powerbomb him with that universal+ striking strengthThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote![]()
Toei tried to advertise it bigtime and shove it through peoples throats. They should've went about it a different way. I also feel like a different studio should've picked it up. Toei also targeted little boys with the anime and its timeslot even though it is a shonen, it should've targeted the age range of in between shonen and seinen tbh. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. The first Toriko OVA did a pretty good job on promoting the series, it was also done by a different studio.

This, except I watched it while in highschool. I was in wrestling and had a really harsh diet so watching toriko was a way to enjoy food without actually eating it. I watched the anime first before going back and reading the manga. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Toriko's lack of good characters really killed it as a series. Outside the trio, the rest were shit.
Eh had something to do with underage prostitution or something like that (paid a chick for sex) she was like 16 he was in his 20s iirc. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
