Thread: Automation

    Automation

How worried should we be about the onslaught of automation, and the prospect that our jobs will be taken over by robots? Do you see this as an issue that could be dominant in our lifetimes?

It's inevitable and will become a problem.

I can only see labor intensive jobs being taken away as well as customer service industry in restaurants being taken by robots in the near future. We're still good.

    My job is safe.

Half the calls I get are just people wanting to talk to an actual human

I'll be dead before that happens, so I don't care.

Sometimes I wonder when the real life equivalent of Skynet will appear.

As some of you may know, I have majored in automation as a bachelor and am currently studying for my master's in automation as well. My main focus is robotics, but I am still very invested in automatization and control systems; partially because I'm not 100% set on my goals and partially because it is an exceedingly interesting field.

The issue of automation doesn't really exist in the way and form that is being presented by certain major figures. It can be said with absolute certainty that a variety of jobs and professions will be lost to robots and other intelligent solutions, and while some people may be alarmed by such a thought, there really is no room for panic here.

For a start, let's talk about the jobs that will take the hit first. The reason that they are being targeted is not only because of the nature of the work itself, but also because of the working conditions in said professions. I'm talking about construction workers, road builders, miners, firefighters, the people who handle and process hazardous materials, and many others. Just thinking about how many lives can be improved or even saved by leaving their work to robots is absolutely amazing.

We are currently undergoing the fourth industrial revolution which has the same nature as all the previous ones. Not only industrial revolutions as whole movements, but also other, singular, scientific and technological breakthroughs - like the invention of the wheel or the plow - have often caused a similar uproar. How did humanity respond to those?

Instead of carrying heavy load on their backs in multiple trips, people mounted them on carts and had animals do it for them. Instead of carrying parts of a car from one work station to the other, the parts were moved along an assembly line, which resulted in much less downtime and heavy lifting.

Just like we have done with previous industrial revolutions and breakthroughs, we will once again move our horizons as a species and work towards goals that we never could before. Without even going into space, we have yet to fully explore the very planet we live on. We need people who can create content that has never been seen before; whether we're talking about art, science, technology or something else entirely doesn't really matter here.

Why do we need people wasting their lives doing manual labor? Why should any human be exposed to a life of routine when they could be something else or creating something new, something that requires the creativity and ingenuity of the human mind, something that a robot will never be able to do.

I mean, I kind of have a job that'll take forever to be done by a robot.

Where are these people wanting to do the jobs of the robots?

Not complaining about it in the internet.

Not the point but how about posts saying it will and is a problem? That's complaining to me.

The notion that increased industrialization/automation will not dramtically effect the lives within our generation is misguided. The reality is that upwards of 40% of low level. low entry common jobs can be potentially replaced by automation within 20 years. Transportation, commerce, service, energy, fabrication, rocketry, medicine, and government jobs can all be replaced within that timeframe. Corporations are automizing their productive and capacity costs while nowhere near matching job creation programs to offest the job loss/displacement that will take place. The unnecessarity of manual human involvement will require a paradigm shift systematically or else the system will implode.

Though rejecting White is a good thing not a bad one
