    History Club - Sengoku Jidai

The first month we're gonna be looking at the Sengoku Jidai period in Japan, heres a brief look at what the topic

The Sengoku Jidai period (1467 – 1603) is a period in Japanese history marked by social upheaval, political intrigue and near-constant military conflict.

Japanese historians named it after the otherwise unrelated Warring States period in China. It came to an end when all political power was unified under the Tokugawa shogunate
Post anything you like about it in this thread, Im going to mainly be on the look out for youtube videos I can watch, Ill share them here and then post my thoughts in the thread. You guys can do the same or you can post articles, stories, podcasts etc.

I found a pretty cool set of videos that gives a brief introduction on the period though, if you guys wanna check it out

I've watched the videos but I'll need more information to provide any contribution and let the info sink in from the videos I've just watched.

Ive watched the first video so far, later on tonight Ill be making footnotes of it and Ill post them here. I find it easier to take information in if I write down and pick out the key points of what Ive watched, its a better reference point as well

And man, this was the era of Miyamoto Musashi?

Heian and Edo > Sengoku tbh

But the sengoku period i would say is definitely most interesting for it's Economic boom

Plus I also have a deep hatred for Oda because of what he did to Ichijōdani

Yeah I didnt realise that either, I cant wait to read up more about him. His life story is a topic in itself. Id be surprised if this set of videos covered it, though once I get a better grasp of the era then Ill start looking closer at individuals in that time period

It wasn't the Era of Niten that was the Tokugawa era aka the era after the Azuchi–Momoyama period

Have all of you guys finished the videos? Let get to discussing.

Oda Nobunaga seems like he was a pretty messed up dude to be honest. How is he usually received in Japan? Do people have mixed feelings about him?

Well history is not kind to leaders who failed. So historical accounts should be taken with a grain of salt.

Oda was a key player and without him Japan wouldn't have unified as well as it did I feel.

After all, he did almost succeed before his subordinate killed him. Then that subordinate was killed by another subordinate, who told his 5 friends tomake sure his son becomes the leader, but one of them who was the most influencial became the leader, and that was that.

    Thanks to Cake~

As I mentioned here, I've been reading Shogun by James Clavell. It's a novel although I've seen several sources explain it doesn't deviate from the major events of Sengoku Jidai. Sort of like a more accurate and realistic Kingdom.

From what I read, Tokugawa was a freaking savage.

Not evil or anything, but damn he was ruthless with his ambition. Kept his cards close to himself and planned further ahead than everyone. Always eliminating his rivals in a way that made it look like it occured by chance or didn't involve him at all.

There's a verse in Japan that goes like this

"What if the bird will not sing?"

    Nobunaga answers, "Kill it!"
Hideyoshi answers, "Make it want to sing."
    Ieyasu answers, "Wait."

And yeah most people are mixed on him in current japan
