Anna pretty much says the only thing they could use to deal with Acnologia is to seal him with the time lapse.
They clearly have no means to hurt him nor was Etherion ever even suggested from any side or faction even when brought up by Mavis.
Given this it should be obvious that no other weapon or spell within the series is capable of downing Acnologia.

Maybe because Acnologia can sense it before it fires and fly away? Maybe he would eat most of the attack? Think it's to soon assume why they haven't suggested Etherion. The fight with him is just starting. Give it some more time.

Why did August use his final move when he was clearly above Gildy and Cana? Why did Irene call for a meteor instead of just stomping those girls. Mashima makes the characters use their best and final moves asap because he's tired of writing this garbage.

just because he can eat all magics doest mean he should be scale to the strongest magics. he might still be hurt by something lot weaker which isnt a magic(curse or anything else)
