    Two.

I think those that say there are more than two think gender is a social construct and differentiate it from sex.

But I'd argue that whether it's mental or physical differences, gender is not a social construct.

    Gender is a complicated thing.
    the definition is,
the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones).
    from google
Although gender is more about attributes (whether physical or mental) rather than sex. It does cover sex as well. There's the "gender binary" of male and female that everyone can agree on.
But there are people who genuinely do not fall into a specific category such as intersex people who are biologically neither male or female.

Not everyone agrees on the answer. I doubt we ever will. But I think there has a to be a whole lot just by the definition of the word.

Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women. To put it another way: "Male" and "female" are sex categories, while "masculine" and "feminine" are gender categories.
    from http://wikieducator.org/Gender_issues_in_education

There's a whole list of gender identities you can see here:

2 sex's, yah. 2 genders? that's more of a toss up. u can't exactly tell whats more dominant in gender, nature or socieital whims.

for those that are ardent believers of the existence of only 2 genders, im curious about the reasoning behind that belief.

If you watched the olympics you'd know of Semenya who has male and female physical attributes. Has female genetalia, but has no womb or ovaries and instead has internal testes that produce testosterone.
