    Like I already explained, it ended up seeming unbalanced only because crispy kept bringing me back . If he revived some townies, I bet no complaints would have been heard. Furthermore, since cripsy needed triggers to bring me back, there was a limitation to keep his power in check.

    i should have limited the trigger use by each player, he tried to abuse that, and i didn't want to do more nerfs midgame, but yeah, there would have been less complaint if he didn't just revive you, but it was pretty op, as along as Crispy was alive, and kept bringing you back.

    i think there are very few roles that weren't op in that game tho, but there was counter for everything except being untargetable and trigger abuse

    What ultimately makes mafia games interesting is the players and the conflicts they have.

    A good set up has things to keep the game interesting but a great set up makes things interesting between the players, instead of just 'taking them on a ride" so to speak

    Yeah Dethy is a good example

    But it can be simple as someone getting bus driven, framed, tracked, etc

    best fights come from town misunderstanding each other

    I'm looking for a fun set up but one that also doesn't easily get "solved" around. So as much as I would like a wide variety of roles it seems smarter to include multiple copies of the same roles as to not promote mass claiming.

    For town here's what I got -

    Roll 9 times for numbers between 1 and 100

    Investigation : 1 - 25
    Protective: 26 - 50
    Killing: 51 - 75
    Communication: 76 - 100

    Investigations:

    I - Cop
    II - Cop + Tracker
    III - Cop + Tracker + Tracker....etc

    Protective

    P - Jailkeeper
    PP - Jailkeeper + Bus Driver
    PPP - Jailkeeper + Bus Driver + Bus Driver...etc

    Killing

    K - Vig
    KK - Vig + Vengeful
    KKK - Vig + Vengeful + Vengful...etc

    Communication

    C - Neighbor
    CC - Pair of masons
    CCC - Masons + Neighbor
    CCCC - Masons + Neighbor + Neighbor...etc

    Basic idea which I like is that each game is almost guaranteed to include core roles of Cop, Neighbor, Vig, and some form of communication. Any suggestions for subsequent roles in each category?

    With town all having power roles and some that are kind of guaranteed claims this gives me an excuse to make scum stronger

    I want Serial Killer to be confirmed in this set up. Should have a BPV + a Ninja or Strongman modifier.

    That leaves the 3 mafia. I would like there to be a random element to their roles as well but some roles are stronger than others. I want them to have fake claims but no guaranteed roles so they can be boxed in a corner.

    For example, here are potential roles for mafia

    - Bus Driver
    - Neighbor
    - Role Cop
    - Roleblock
    - Strongman
    - Ninja
    - Godfather
    - Tracker

    But some of these roles are more powerful than the others, so I feel like I shouldn't just have this random list

    Another idea I'm toying around with for the mafia is letting the godfather decide the night kill and he can assign a x1 Ninja and x1 Strongman instead of having them as dedicated roles for the mafia.

    Then the other two mafia can pick among the following roles

    - Godfather
    - Bus Driver
    - Neighbor
    - Vengeful
    - Tracker
    - Role Cop

    maybe
    - Roleblock
    i had a big post written up but my computer blue-screened and i don't feel like doing it again

    the gist of it was that you could experiment with making certain number ranges correspond to role modifiers / variations. it might become clearer if i show it with an example

    I =

    1-5 - Macho Cop
    6-15 - Sane Cop
    16 - 20 - Amnesiac Cop
    21 - 24 - Paranoid Cop
    25 - Insane Cop

    II =

    1-10 - Voyeur
    11 - 25 - Watcher

    III =

    1-15 - Deputy Cop
    16 - 24 - Coroner
    25 - Thief

    these numbers and roles are arbitrary, but you get where i'm coming from. also if you decide to do this you shouldn't think too hard on balance anyways, this set-up would have innate fluctuation in how strong each faction is so it really doesn't matter. i personally would just try to make it more novel instead of balanced.

    also i feel like you are overcomplicating how to rand the mafia roles. just assign certain roles to certain town role splits. for example, if there is one investigative role, draw a mafia role from the one-investigative-role pool. if there are three investigative roles, draw a mafia role from the three-investigative-role pool. you could still rand the drawing of the mafia roles, but they will always be limited to a certain pool simply depending on which town roles are present. this also allows you to design the game in such a way that you can give a faction certain advantages. in the example above, three I's makes it possible for a town coroner to be in the game. naturally, you should then include the possibility for a mafia janitor in the three-investigative-role pool for mafia, as the coroner would be useless otherwise. it still doesn't guarantee that the coroner would be useful because a mafia janitor might just not get randed, but the possibility exists and that's all that matters.

    of course, if you decide to do it this way, there needs to be an overlap in the mafia role pool. there need to be some roles that are in multiple pools, because if a role is only present once, the mafia can immediately deduce which town roles could be present in the game which is a big advantage. by making overlapping roles, you can alleviate that sort of.

    anyways, i'm not sure if i managed to explain this sufficiently. if i couldn't bring my point across then simply try to tackle it alone lol.
