It wasn't so much bad but it was a different experience. I had a friend who watched the anime then switched over to the manga and he did notice some difference aside from the anime only ending. Examples would include how much more serious it felt and more importantly the narrations/detailed explanation. The anime was watered down heavily and was very light-hearted, not to say that Toriko always has to be gritty but the OVA nailed it. Both were missing the narrations.
If a Toriko anime/OVA does return then narrations is a must. Preferably the same narrator as the HxH 2011 anime or the one from Jojo's bizarre adventure.
Anyways, you have to read cooking festival arc all over again, that's where Toei messed up big time and you'll notice it once you read the arc. Have fun and join the chapter discussions once you're caught up.
Tho I might have anime ending verse where Tommy is really tiny so people can bully him.
Plus manga might have some good icon material.
I can understand why some people might not like the Anime for Toriko, but I for one actually enjoyed it.
I started watching the Anime long before reading the Manga. Eventually I started reading the Manga and got far ahead plot-wise compared to the actual Anime. The last episodes for the Cooking Fest Arc did shock me, but overall I wasn't too disappointed; however, I thought it wasn't a great idea to go a different direction compared to the Manga. I did enjoy watching it though.
The Anime was great because when it showed the variety of foods it actually did get me drooling and hungry.
The comedic scenes were great because of the voices and the intros for each episodes were good too because of the different foods the narrator described "Someone once said..." those were awesome.
However, the fighting scenes in the Manga were so much more epic compared to the anime - that's saying a lot. I wished the anime continued, it was just getting better (plot-wise).
Just my 2 cents.
Regardless of the enjoyment one may have with the Toriko anime, it's a bad anime no matter how you look about it, or at least, it's a really bad adaptation of the manga.
This is not only about the animation (it was decent enough in some episodes, although they managed to ruin other really epic scenes from the manga) but about the censorship. And when I say censorship I'm not speaking only about the blood, I'm speaking about EVERYTHING.
What in my opinion makes Toriko's world building so excellent is not only the crazy environments Shima is able to portray, but also subtle things like the "food based morals" the series has.
Toriko may die before leaving any food in the plate and at the same time he will let an innocent person die in front of him if this brings him closer to his desired food (see when an innocent is killed in front of him at Gourmet Casino without him doing anything at all).
And that kind of logic is applied constantly (see what he tells to the 4 beast limb, for another example), this is why Toriko's world building is top notch. Not only the world is pretty and interesting, it's also really well thought.
And those morals are lost because of the ******* censorship. In the anime Toriko is just a smarter Luffy, and the morals are the morals one could expect for a kid's TV. That makes Toriko's characters less singular and more generic, and that's only a single aspect that's lost in the adaptation.
What I mean t was it is only a bad Anime because of how much it deviated and censored the source material, it would be like having attack on titan with no blood or hunter X hunter where kite got poisoned by pitou instead of decapitated. It is not bad stand alone but compared to it's source it is crap
Who really cares how the animation looks. Anime is for people who havent discovered manga yet or people who want to watch the firet wpisode to see if its worth reading the entire manga.
Why does most animes that have filler ending have the MC evolve/turn into something like how Toriko turned to half red ogre like form in the anime?
