list them and add some extra input.

no order

takehiko inoue (slam dunk, vagabond, REAL): beautiful characterisation, good development and progress, highly entertaining and great artistic abilities as shown on vagabond. made basketball more popular in japan thanks to slam dunk.

hirohiko araki (jojo's bizarre adventure): a series that stood the test of time. well thought out characters. focuses not so much on storytelling but more on characters. also great amount of side work and impact on the fashion world and culture.

eiichiro oda (one piece): that amount of work he puts into his manga is incredible. really enjoyable story and work in general that took manga to the next level. you can argue about the story and such but its mostly nitpicking and you see the amount of passion that is there.

Akira Toriyama - Made an instant classic of a series. (Dragon Ball) Even kept going when he had an ideal ending just because his fans wanted more. #respect

Oda Echiiro - An amazing and dedicated worker. Knows no such thing as beaks.

Yoshiro Togashi - Makes a fairy intelligent shounen that doesn't follow the usual formula, as well as making his power system very detailed and diverse.

Hirohiko Akarai - Has one of the longest running mangas. Makes all of his fights with a more-then-meets-the-eye thing.

Yoshiro Togashi - (YYH and HxH) One of the best storytellers in the manga business.

Nobuhiro Watsuki - (RK and Busou Renkin) Able to mix shounen, shoujo, and seinen elements to come out with a well made manga.

Hiromu Arakawa - (FMA and Hero Tale) A very good artist when it comes to special effects and fight scenes. She is also good at telling an engaging story.

Hiro Mashima - (RAVE, Monster Hunter Arage, and Fairy Tail) He's able to find new ways to tell a story, make hilarious characters, and creates powers and abilities that are powerful without being broken. He's very good at adapting and is able to change his style on the fly.

Eiichiro Oda - (Wanted and OP) Very consistent. He takes elements and ideas from a lot of different manga and western movies and cartoons and makes them his own in a unique way. Just like the different themes in Wanted, the theme of each story arc after East Blue is based off of or is a tribute to a different manga, comic, cartoon, or current event.

Oda (One Piece)

Togashi (YYH, HXH)

Shima (Toriko)

If I could only pick 3 authors whose manga I'd be allowed to read, it'd be these 3.

Yoshiro Togashi-(YYH and HxH)
Akira Toriyama/Oda- (DBZ, One Piece)

I challenge anyone to make better list

Porcelainpot

1) Inoue Takehiko: He's written a few amazing manga like Vagabond, Real and Slam Dunk, is still working hard at his age of 46, has drawn amazing art books, and he's bald.
2) Naoki Urasawa: Wrote and drew Monster, Pluto, 20th Century Boys, Billy Bat and so many others. The amount he's written is impressive, and the quality of most of his series too. Practically every series he's written hasn't had a good ending though, and he recycles the same faces for all of them.
3) Eichiro Oda: Simply because of his work ethic.
4) Kentaro Miura: It's a misconception that he takes lots of hiatuses, usually he works constantly and releases chapters at a schedule different from the magazine he's part of. The current hiatus is a pisser though.
5) Osamu Tezuka: I haven't read any of his works but many of his works are meant to be excellent, and he drew some of the most influential series like Astro Boy.

Wing Shing Ma (created Storm Riders/Fung Wan, the best Chinese manga period)
Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi (for Toriko)
Sakamoto Kenshiro (he's cool because he copies other mangaka's ideas and makes them better, like with Buster Keel)
Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball)
Shun Matsuena (For Kenichi, which I feel doesn't get enough credit because of people complaining about the fan service)

No hard feelings, probably would have been good on my part to place 'faves' on top to avoid any confusion.

But since I thought placing 'other' before faves was enough, I decided against it.

Miura, followed by Oda and Inoue.

Mitsutoshi would be up there too, but since Toei ruined his Manga even worse than they did One Piece and Slam Dunk, and he didn't give them any shit for it like Inoue did, he's not up there.

Since my posts were moved, I'll elaborate my thoughts here:

1. Miura (Berserk) - Mad respect... Enough said.

2. Inoue (Slam Dunk, Vagabond) - More talented authors need to be as prideful as him, IMO... Slam Dunk is in my top 5 favorite series, and although he came up with the Farming Arc and Deaf Guy Arc, Vagabond still has great moments.

3. Oda (One Piece) - A very talented Shonen author, who puts insane detail into his long running series... He also gets too much backlash for Part II, but his real problem is that he's too humble.

4. Mitsutoshi (Toriko) - The author of Toriko is also very talented, and his Manga is actually quite similar to Oda's in storytelling, which is another plus. Unfortunately he's even more humble than Oda and this hurts his success since Toei really screwed with his work.

5. Toriyama (Dragon Ball) - Many people downgrade Toriyama for being lazy, but no other author was put in as much pressure as he was. The fact that he pulled through and made an average Shonen Manga at that is really something.

Hideaki Sorachi: Gintama.
Naoki Urasawa: Another Genius.
